About the Project

Murkhiv began with grief, and became something much larger — a living archive of cats who mattered, told in the words of the people who loved them.

Why we built this

When a person we love passes, we have an entire culture built around remembrance. Obituaries, memorial services, gravestones, anniversary traditions. The rituals exist because grief needs somewhere to go.

When a cat passes, the grief is just as real - but the infrastructure isn't there. Social media posts disappear into feeds. Photo albums gather dust. The cat's story lives only in the memory of the people who were there.

We built Murkhiv to change that. A dedicated, permanent place where every cat gets a profile - their photos, their name, their age, their story - and where visitors from anywhere in the world can discover them and send love.

The name is a blend of two Ukrainian words: мур - the sound a cat makes, that soft, instinctive murmur - and архів, meaning archive. Murkhiv is exactly that: an archive of purrs.

The cat who started it all

Every project has an origin. Ours has four paws and amber eyes.

Luna — the cat who inspired Murkhiv

The Founding Cat

She showed us what was missing

Luna was a grey tabby with amber eyes and a personality that occupied more space than her small body suggested. She belonged to Marta — one of the people who built this platform — and for fourteen years she was the quiet centre of a very loud household.

She passed in March 2026, on a cold morning, in the chair by the radiator she had claimed as her own since kittenhood. In the weeks that followed, Marta found herself searching for somewhere to put Asia's story — a real place, not a post, not a caption. Somewhere permanent.

"I wanted a place where people could find her, years from now, and understand how extraordinary an ordinary cat can be."

That search led nowhere. So we built the place ourselves. And now Asia can get her own Murkhiv profile — along with everyone else's cat.

📜

Permanent memory

Profiles live on this platform indefinitely. A cat added today can be discovered and loved by someone ten years from now.

❤️

Community love

Anyone can visit a profile and send a heart — a small gesture that says I see this cat, and I'm glad they existed.

🐾

Every cat matters

Grand or shy, ancient or young — every cat who was loved deserves to have that love witnessed and remembered.
